Chesley Bonestell (1888-1986) was a painter, designer and illustrator. His paintings were a major influence on science-fiction art and illustration and he helped inspire the American space programme. In his early career he helped design the art deco façade on the Chrysler Building in New York and worked on designs for the Golden Gate Bridge. However, it is for his photo-like paintings of planetscapes that Bonestell is most famous.
The character Chester Bonestell is named in his honour.
